February 28, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented the 88th Annual Academy Awards. Deluxe worked on over half the nominated films for the industry’s big night, comprising every nominee in fifteen categories and including every Best Picture nominee. By the end of the night, every winning feature film was a project with services by Deluxe.
The night’s biggest winner, Mad Max: Fury Road, is a particularly wonderful Deluxe success story. Not only did Deluxe brands provide innovative services across production through to delivery, but the film took home both Best Sound Mix and Best Sound Editing, with services provided by Deluxe’s StageOne Sound. Fury Road has had an incredible run since its release last year, a surprise critical and box office success that has since become a steady dark-horse candidate throughout the awards season, landing at the Academy Awards as the ceremony’s biggest winner and the biggest winner ever for an Australian film.
Nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards, Fury Road went on to win six: Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Editing, Best Sound Mix and Best Sound Editing. Deluxe was specifically nominated with Iloura VFX Supervisor Tom Wood’s nomination in the Visual Effects category, acknowledging the incredible work that the Iloura team did on the film. Iloura created the toxic storm sequence in the film, which recently earned a VES award, as well as the Citadel location and a host of other VFX features, completing over 1,600 visual effects shots in total. In addition to Iloura and StageOne Sound, Deluxe brands DDP, Deluxe Technicolor Digital Cinema, EFILM and Stereo D provided services for Mad Max: Fury Road.
