Iconic stoners Jay and Silent Bob return to the big screen in a whole new series of cannabis-induced shenanigans for the “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.” The film follows the two titular characters, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, on a cross-country trek to put a stop to a Hollywood reboot of “Bluntman and Chronic,” a comic book based on the pair. Led by VFX Supervisor Armen Kevorkian, Encore VFX helped realize more than 200 visual effects shots for the feature, including the design and creation of the Bluntmobile and Bluntcave.
Encore’s work appears from the onset of the film as the Bluntmobile busts onto the scene in the opening titles. In a haze, it skids and ramps in slo-mo with the top down to reveal the film’s title in skid marks. Reminiscent of the original Batmobile but with a marijuana-inspired design, the Bluntmobile is housed in a Bluntcave, also envisioned by the Encore VFX team, complete with a modern-day reactor that looks like a giant vape.
“The film is hilarious and over the top, so we really pushed the effects to the extreme to further play up the comedic moments. I’ve worked with Kevin extensively on previous projects and he gave us a ton of creative freedom. It certainly was one of our more unconventional jobs,” shared Kevorkian. “We infused marijuana references into nearly every aspect of our designs, from the car lights to the logos and rims, and the vape shaped reactor in the Bluntcave.”
In addition to the Bluntmobile and Bluntcave, Encore VFX’s team contributed a host of effects that take some the film’s funniest scenes even more over the top, including a CG porta potty attached to a van that dumps its contents on KKK members, smoke, fire, Bluntman and Chronic Funko dolls, a hologram of Chris Hemsworth, and more.
