Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ron Howard, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” from Lucasfilm and Disney takes audiences on a journey to a galaxy far, far away to reveal the origins of scoundrel and unlikely hero Han Solo, and his ragtag crew, among them Chewbacca and notorious gambler Lando Calrissian.
To ensure audiences around the world are able to experience the thrilling space adventure exactly as the filmmakers intended, EFILM established a remote grading environment in the ‘Carriage House’ at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California, that mirrored EFILM’s flagship facility in Hollywood, which served as the hub of all of the content.
EFILM worked closely with filmmakers throughout editorial conform and multiple color passes. After EFILM editors completed the on-site editorial conform, Joe Gawler of Harbor Picture Company handled the 2D grade, working to achieve the vision of cinematographer Bradford Young. Handling the 2D grade at the ranch allowed the filmmakers to seamlessly move between Skywalker’s sound mixing stage and the EFILM-constructed remote color grading environment.
Once the 2D grade was completed, EFILM colorist Steven Delman handled the 3D, 3D Dolbyvision grades, and 3D home video deliverable back at EFILM Hollywood.
Having created 3D editions of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens;" "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story;" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi;" for Lucasfilm and Disney, Deluxe’s Stereo D added another dimension to its work on the iconic franchise with "Solo: A Star Wars Story" 360° – an immersive new experience giving online fans a taste of the feature with a clip that provides viewers with an opportunity to see Han Solo play a high-stakes game with Lando Calrissian, who wagers the Millennium Falcon in the bet.
Working with ILMxLAB, Stereo D applied innovative stitching, roto, and paint artistry to create an experience where viewers can absorb all the scene’s action with pivot and full rotation through techniques that have primarily been applied to their award-winning work creating 3D for feature films. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is now in theaters.
