Based on the seminal horror novel by legendary author Stephen King, the latest adaptation of Pet Sematary brings the tale of the Creed family and a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods to modern audiences. Directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, and shot by Laurie Rose, BSC, the film from Paramount Pictures premiered to rave reviews at 2019 SXSW Film Festival and released widely on April 5, 2019.
In shaping the visual tone for the project, the filmmakers worked with Senior Colorist Mitch Paulson at Deluxe’s EFILM post production facility in Hollywood for the final color finish, with the HDR pass completed at Deluxe’s Stage One grading environment.
Given creative freedom to deliver an original look that complemented this re-imagining of King’s classic novel, Paulson aimed to keep the audience on edge with a cool, dark aesthetic that capitalized on the HDR format.
“The movie has such a dark look but we were able to bring out details in the shadows that would normally be lost with the Dolby Cinema pass, making for a scarier, richer experience for the audience,” described Paulson.
