Set in the late-2000s, “Hustlers” follows a crew of savvy strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients amid the fallout from the global financial crisis. Shot by Todd Banhazl and directed by Lorene Scafaria, the pair turned to EFILM Senior Colorist Walter Volpatto to create a bold filmic look that captured the essence of that time period and conveyed the energy of the story.
Though the film was shot digitally, Banhazl tapped Volpatto’s previous experience working with film, which includes such titles as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. Before production began, they worked closely to develop a LUT reminiscent of the Fuji Eterna aesthetic, with the help of EFILM’s color science team.
“Film has grain and halation, which exposes red in strong highlights creates a glow, so we added these characteristics to the footage,” described Volpatto. “The lighting Todd did on set is pretty astounding, so we kept the color correction very faithful to what was done on set, with a few nuances for select scenes like the montage or in the police station where we had strong fluorescent light.”
Volpatto completed SDR, HDR (including Dolby Cinema), and home entertainment color grades of the film. He noted. “It was great working with both Todd and Lorene. I can’t wait to work with them again in the future.”
Dailies and Final Conform were completed at Deluxe New York, with Colorist William Stokes handling the dailies color grade.
