On April 18, over 100,000 broadcasting industry representatives from 186 countries descended on Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters' yearly conference, taking in the latest technology, learning about new workflow solutions, getting updated on industry trends and, of course, collecting swag.
Deluxe was there giving nonstop demos and showcasing our creative work as an exhibitor. Our meeting rooms were booked solid with clients, and our booth, which was called out in the NAB Daily as “the prettiest booth in the South Hall Upper,” drew big crowds of interested colleagues from all areas of broadcast and content creation throughout the week. We also took the opportunity of NAB to launch a new logo, a new website and gave clients a closer look at the exciting things going on across the company. Here’s a roundup of highlights from the week:
The Deluxe MediaCloud team created a TV station in the booth in two days, showing live 4K content traveling through Vegas, London, Sweden and Australia. It’s the industry’s first software-defined broadcast platform, which is already supporting SBS channels in Australia.
MediaCloud also received a big industry honor—a Game Changer Award from the International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers in the category of Services. The awards recognize new solutions that offer significant benefits and new opportunities to broadcast and media technology, and are selected on the basis of the perceived impact on the industry in terms of end user benefit, value for money, innovation, implementation, performance or new opportunities created. Winners were selected from 80 submissions by a panel of 40 independent industry professionals, each with specialist expertise in one or more of the award categories. The judging committee noted that “MediaCloud illustrates the benefits of flexibility and speed to ramp up or reduce services as needed, demonstrating a huge shift in how playout services will operate in the future.”
The Deluxe OnDemand team demonstrated our unique ability to take content from a single point of ingest through the delivery supply chain. The OnDemand team showcased its key workflow capabilities that enable distributors and programmers to quickly and easily participate in the next wave of 4K/UHD with HDR content. Showcasing the platform that can carry files up to 10 terabytes large, the team also highlighted the recent support for FairPlay Streaming technology.
Our newly launched Deluxe VR business highlighted our ability to create real-time and pre-rendered CG content and 360-degree live action video—from concept to production and post. Visitors got hands-on demos of two Deluxe VR productions; an incredibly up-close look at an F14 jet and an interactive story featuring robot aliens. Deluxe VR also caught the eye of Post Magazine, which recognized Deluxe VR with an Honorable Mention on its annual list of NAB ‘Post Picks.’ This list recognizes “the most innovative and coolest new products and technologies” at the show, along with those that captured the most attention and interest. Congrats to Deluxe VR and special recognition to demo guru Daniel Oberlerchner who guided newbies and veteran VR audiences through countless demos with humor and expertise all week.
HDR was undoubtedly a huge topic of conversation, and Deluxe’s Company 3 was there to speak about the pioneering and wide-ranging services we offer in the format. Stephen Nakamura presented his perspectives in a high-profile panel session on HDR in Live Action and Visual Effects, and Devin Sterling was a featured guest at the Dolby booth, giving five presentations about HDR and our services.
And during the show, when StudioDaily announced its inaugural list of 50 key creatives and technologists whose leadership and influence in all parts of the industry are breaking new ground in media and entertainment, we were excited to see four of our own superstars recognized:
- Armen Kevorkian of Encore VFX
- James Cowan of Encore Vancouver
- Heydar Adel of Company 3
- Weyron Henriques of EFILM
The list recognizes “executives and producers who make great work happen; directors, cinematographers and editors who push the creative envelope; and scientists, engineers, inventors and other innovators who keep pushing the state of the creative arts.”
With accolades and conference roundups still coming in from press around the world, NAB 2016 was a great success for Deluxe, and congrats to everyone involved!
